Jack The Lad - a 1973 spin-off (in part) from Lindisfarne. Excellent live band, played the pub circuit. Little Billy Mitchell a cracking performer and apparently still going (Billy, not the band). Lasted around 3 years, releasing 4 albums of which I have two.

Sunderlands finest, big Mackem fans, Frankie & The Heartstrings, whom Lauren Laverne's brother was an original member. Her band Kenickie were also from Sunderland as ade The Futureheads. The Unthanks sisters are from Northumberland.

Re: nor eastern bands
Weren't VENOM from Newcastle? And The Tygers Of Pan Tang? North East liked its 70s/ 80s metal.

But who cares?? Most Scottish sounding group ever is probably Big Country. None of them were born in Scotland. Fact.

Its because the North East is a bedrock of a self serving, introspective, sub-cultural breed of cretin. Similar to the scots whose greatest cultural offering is Lulu.

I was up there a couple of weeks ago, but the only band I saw was elastic. I was impressed with St James' Park. Totally dominates the city centre.
